What assu president said about the strike will shock you

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, is currently meeting the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities in Abuja over the strike embarked upon by the union.

When the two sides met on Thursday, the meeting was adjourned after the Federal Government proposed the merger of the contentious Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System and ASUU salary payment system.

It was agreed that ASUU should present the proposal to Congress before today’s meeting.

Before Tuesday’s meeting went into a closed session, ASUU president, Prof Abiodun Ogunyemi, said it was unfortunate that the government made IPPIS look like the major issue in the union’s demands.

“Another issue to correct is that we never said university bursars are to generate the budget for the instructions. ASUU is here with a report from members,” the ASUU president said.

In a related development, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has also withdrawn its support for the implementation of the IPPIS, for its members across Nigerian universities

The workers’ union, which had initially supported the initiative, said its trust in the system was betrayed “as reflected in the various irregularities noticed in the payment of February salaries of its members.”

The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) also condemned the irregularities observed in the February salaries of its members paid by the government, saying the deployment of the IPPIS disregarded its members’ peculiar allowances, and particularly the Peculiar Earned Academic Allowance (PEAA

    What is the need fo4 strike after all schools already shot down but coronavirus so the best thing is to sit on a round table to discuss way forward.
